Cold

Our house is big and old and is heated by steam radiators. However, the boiler is gas fired and is SOOO expensive to run that we put in two wood-burning stoves in two of our fireplaces a little over a year ago so we could curb our natural gas usage. It has more than paid for itself in natural gas savings, so we are happy about that.

We don’t really keep the house very warm-we try, but it is just so hard to heat and especially when it’s windy, it’s like the wind sucks the heat right out of the house. We come home and put on sweatshirts/fleece to wear, and cold winter is only a couple of months, so we do our best to tough it out as much as we can.

Keep in mind is has been very windy the last couple of days around our parts. Anyway, after church I was making lunch, specifically boiling a big pot of water to cook pasta with steam filling up the kitchen. I was talking to Noah when I realized I could see my breath. I wasn’t sure that’s really what was happening so I had Noah do it, yep we could see our breath. Then Tim came in and I showed him—now it wasn’t really that cold in our house, but we were seeing our breath. It had to have something to do with the steam in the air from the boiling water. I asked Tim since he knows most things science related, but he was at a loss too.

Needless to say, the furnace was subsequently turned on, even though we knew it wasn’t really cold enough to see our breath.
